Green Technology at SAC Ayr

This October, SAC's Ayr campus saw the launch of SAC's new course in Green Technology, which focuses on the development of renewable resources in rural areas.

Studies range from the generation of energy from wind, waste, water and the sun, to the production and processing of crops for energy, pharmaceuticals and raw materials for industry.

In addition to school leavers, the course has attracted mature students from a variety of backgrounds, leading to a fascinating cross-fertilisation of ideas in class discussions. Some students have previous work experience in engineering, project management, or running their own business, while others had completed one or two years of study at another University before deciding to change track into Green Technology. One part-time student works as an Energy Adviser with a local district council.

Over the past term, in addition to attending lectures and exploring environmental issues, students have been busy developing their technical skills in engineering workshops and their practical laboratory skills in cell biology, microbiology and chemistry. As an example of the application of their studies, they visited a local hydro-electric scheme with students from the Environmental Protection and Sustainable Environmental Management courses.

Some students, with guidance from staff, are now preparing applications for relevant work experience positions next summer, to further improve their job prospects after qualifying in this rapidly expanding sector of employment.
