Auchincruive To Melbourne - The Golden Years!

A group of the former West of Scotland College of Agriculture students waited a long time and travelled many miles to enjoy a Golden Anniversary reunion recently. 50 years since they studied together at Auchincruive, they met up again in Melbourne, Australia, to renew their friendships.

The group of former students came from South Africa, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Scotland and England. Their programme of events included visiting a farm where 250 cows were milked in 40 minutes and comparing cheese making Australian style to how it was taught in the Dairy School 50 years ago. They also witnessed some of the dreadful devastation caused by the recent bush fires in Victoria.

The group was lead by Neil Clark, originally from near Dumfries and now based in Bendigo, Australia.  Among the ladies present were Marjorie Park, nee Robinson, Joan Short, nee Ripley, Barbara McLaren, nee Aiken. Arthur Budge, Randy Cunningham, John Plough, Willie McGregor and “Doc” Mclaren were some of the male student members of the party.

It was commented that the standard of education at the West College must have been reasonably good all those years ago to equip so many students to be sufficiently successful to meet up again on the other side of the world!
