Short Courses in Leisure, Sport, Recreation, and Tourism
Single modules available for part-time and short course study
Modules for those interested in the leisure and tourism industries, including sport and rural recreation. Industry overviews, as well as specific skills such as group leadership and horse management are offered.
- Understanding Leisure: The influence of leisure in society; changing needs of the individual; motivation and participation.
- Skill Acquisition and Performance: Applying knowledge and principles of skills learning to athletic performance.
- Introduction to Coaching and Leadership: Acquiring the necessary skills to lead group recreational coaching sessions; roles, action and legal issues.
- The UK Tourism Industry – An Introduction: Organisational structure, definitions and key aspects of tourism in the UK.
- Land Use Systems: The study of historical and current uses of the countryside, and the physical and economic impacts.
- Heritage Studies: Key physical factors and human influences on Scotland’s heritage. The role of public, private and voluntary organisations.
- Countryside Recreation: An overview of countryside recreation and visitor management. Site visits and development of positive visitor management proposals form an integral part of the unit.
- A Practical Approach to Leisure: An overview of the hugely important UK leisure industry is provided with an evaluation of the methods used to promote leisure participation. Management roles within facilities are also examined with an analysis of how the industry is funded.
- Play Development 1: The concept of children's play and its importance to society will be looked at. The module will examine the provision of children's' play facilities and how a varied programme of play activities has a positive and beneficial effect on the individual child. Students will devise a strategy for selecting an appropriate programme of children's play activities.
- Leisure Provision for the Community: Leisure needs and provision of community leisure will be examined as well as the role of leisure in addressing issues of social exclusion. The consequences of lack of, or inadequate, leisure provision in communities will be looked at as well as the consequences of this.
- Sports Development: This module is concerned with this vitally important aspect of sport and recreation management and how it can foster participation at grass roots and elite levels. This is becoming an important part of government policy with regard to encouraging physical activity within the population. Local and national initiatives to promote sport will be examined along with the agencies and bodies that are active within the UK.
