Short Courses in Horticulture and Garden Design

Single modules available for part-time and short course study

Modules of interest to all those with green-fingers. Plant propagation, identification, and selection, as well as landscape and garden design and construction.
  • Horticultural Practices: Propagation, potting on, planting & pruning.
  • Plant Recognition: Methods for identifying plants. Development of plant knowledge.
  • Plants for Gardens: The principles of selection of plants for differing roles and situations in gardens.
  • Fundamentals of Landscape Surveying: Linear surveying, line and area levelling, simple setting out procedures.
  • Design Process and Composition in the Landscape - An Introduction: Landscape design process from developing a client brief to production of a design solution. Basic design and graphic skills.
  • Garden Design Concepts: The process of designing a garden and evaluating the design outcomes. Development of design skills and presentation of designs.
  • Landscape Design History: Introduction to the history of landscape design from Roman times to present day. 
  • Lawn Construction and Management: Construction methods, characteristics of grass species and mixtures, maintenance for different purposes.
  • Design and Use of Hard Landscape Features: Design of the hard landscape component of a garden, selection and estimation of materials.
  • Constructing Hard Landscape Features: Uses and installation methods for a range of structures, participation in a landscape construction project using a variety of materials.
  • Plant Growth and Development: The purpose of this module is to develop knowledge and understanding of the biological process underlying the growth, reproduction and breeding of plants.
  • Planting Design: The module considers environmental factors influencing the choice of species. The functions of plants within the designed landscape are considered, and the influence of time and scale on planting design in a range of designed plantings explored. Principles are applied in a design project.
