Short Courses in Environmental Subjects

Single modules available for part-time and short course study

Modules relate to the understanding of a range of environmental issues and their impact on the world, society, and business.
  • Soil Management: Understanding soil properties and processes and improving soil fertility.
  • Pollution and Waste Management: Identification of pollutants and waste materials and understanding their control and management.
  • Environmental Management: Understanding the processes that improve the environmental performance of businesses.
  • Earth Science: Understanding the geological and geomorphological features that define our landscape.
  • Energy Management: Renewable and conventional energy sources: their pros and cons.
  • Environmental Awareness: Discussing the foremost environmental issues affecting society and our world today.
  • Transport - Towards a Sustainable Future: This module looks at the current transportation systems and infrastructure. It identifies the main environmental problems associated with transport and looks at ways to mitigate the adverse impact of transport on the environment.
  • Resource Economics: Resource economics can be the source of environmental problems and this module suggests how this should be addressed. The sustainable exploitation of natural resources according to Resource Economics is also explored.
  • Planning - An introduction: This module looks at the origins of the planning system and explains its purpose. It includes a description of the legislation, policy and guidance underpinning planning and improves understanding of the organisation and procedures involved in the implementation of new plans.
  • Habitat Management: This module looks at the management of various habitats to suit the needs of the animals living in the area.
  • Ecology - An Introduction: This module introduces key ideas, so even if you have no background in biology, geography or ecology, you should have few problems. The aim is to slowly build up your ecological knowledge and understanding so as you become a confident, competent ecologist who can relate to habitat management issues.
  • Managing the Aquatic Environment: This module looks at aquatic ecosystems, interactions with the terrestrial environment, consideration of emerging legislation regarding freshwater systems and catchment areas.
  • Waste Management and Pollution Control: This module investigates various pollution issues and investigates the use of management techniques to prevent, reduce and mitigate for these emissions. Identification of pollutants is most important and the key principals behind their control are studied.
