Mode of Study

This course can be studied full or part-time. This course provides a University of Edinburgh degree, but is taught and managed largely by SAC.

This course is part of a wider group of postgraduate diplomas/Master of Science courses offered on a modular basis through the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Edinburgh. Students undertake taught modules between September and March followed by a research project between March and August. There is a one week study tour (usually overseas) in April. Course Description

Ecological economics links both the theory and practice of economics with that of natural ecosystems. The programme aims to give students the opportunity to learn about the role that economics can play in the design and implementation of sustainable policies for ecosystem management.

Students will gain: an understanding of the multi- dimensional nature of environmental problems; an appreciation of the interaction between ecology and economics; the means to develop expertise in design and implementation of sustainable environmental policies; enhanced skills in specialist topics.

Postgraduate Structure

Study Structure

The taught component of each course, leading to the Postgraduate Diploma, comprises 6 modules studied over a period of 9 months, starting in October. Each course is made up of core modules, together with recommended and elective modules chosen with the approval of the Director of the programme.

Students progressing to the MSc will undertake a further 3 month period of directed study leading to the production of a dissertation in late September.

Methods of Delivery and Assessment

Each module will be assessed by a combination of course work and examination. The examination paper will take place at the end of each module. An oral examination may also be given. Each student will also be assessed on the written dissertation.

Entry Requirements

The normal minimum entry requirement is a university degree or its equivalent in an appropriate subject.

Evidence of proficiency in English must be provided by those for whom this is not their first language. Edinburgh University requires a language proficiency of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

Relevant work experience is desirable.
