Edinburgh Student Life

Life outside your course

Edinburgh, with a population of half a million people, and an unusually large and diverse student population (over 62,000 students study in Edinburgh) offers community, variety and a wealth of activities to recommend it as a popular place in which to live and study.
Edinburgh

Edinburgh's historical centre, a majestic castle, elegant suburbs, parks and gardens, combine well with contemporary, modern development. Its east coast location means you can easily choose to be by the sea or walking or skiing in the Pentland Hills. Edinburgh is a leading shopping centre enjoying major retail investment and a wealth of places in which to eat and drink. Nightlife is rich and varied. There are excellent facilities in the city for all indoor and outdoor sports and enough theatres, concert halls and smaller venues to stage the world famous Fringe and various arts festivals.

Student Life at Edinburgh

As a student at SAC Edinburgh you will be able to join the Edinburgh University Union, focus of student life at Edinburgh University. This allows you to join the numerous student societies and sport clubs available – there are currently over 160 societies you can join! All SAC Edinburgh students are welcomed to join the Edinburgh Agric Society which organises various activities including annual visit to Dublin for the Dublin Agri Ball, Bad Taste Night, Beer ā€˜n’ Tiering and much, much more.

The city is perfect for student life; vibrant and full of activity, yet compact enough to get around easily. There are countless pubs and numerous restaurants and cafes. Culturally, Edinburgh has it all: cinemas (mainstream, international, and independent), major theatre productions, many concert halls, art galleries and museums, and numerous clubs and venues for dance, urban, jazz, rock, pop, and folk music.

Sports

In addition to supporting numerous student societies, the Edinburgh University Union runs the Sports Centre and playing fields, offering a wide range of indoor and outdoor sports facilities. SAC Edinburgh has its own rugby, football and hockey teams which compete against local teams as well as the other SAC campuses. The city's sports facilities are also impressive, including Europe's largest artificial ski slope.

Student Presidents

President of the Edinburgh Agricultural Society.
"We encourage all SAC Edinburgh students to join the Agric. Society - it's not just for agriculture students! The committee tries to involve all the students by organising a range of activities including fancy dress evenings, ceilidhs, various charity fundraisers, and an end of year ball. Our sports teams regularly compete with other local teams. Each year we go away for a weekend and this year we are off to Harper Adams University College for sporting competitions and socialising!"

President of the Edinburgh Green Feet Environmental Society.
"The Green Feet society's aim is to provide students from all courses access to course-related activities, current issues, award schemes, training courses, and social events, for example: guest speakers, John Muir Trust awards, rock climbing, white water rafting, orienteering, and first aid training, as well as charity and conservation tasks. We're always open to suggestions and have no restriction on events and activities - after all - our environment is everything around us!"
