Ayr Student Life

Life outside your course

The seaside town of Ayr is a busy and historic centre, offering good social and recreational facilities and attracting many visitors throughout the year.

Ayr

SAC Ayr is based on the Riverside Campus in central Ayr, about a 10 minute walk from the town centre.

Situated on the west coast of Scotland, Ayr looks across the Firth of Clyde towards the Isle of Arran and the atmospheric Mull of Kintyre.

To the south of Ayr lies the unspoilt countryside of the Galloway Hills, while the buzz of Glasgow, to the north, is easily reached.

Student Life at Ayr

The new Ayr campus is located adjacent to the Ayr River in a park-like setting within a short walk to the town centre and rail and bus connections.

The campus is a newly built facility shared with the UWS (University of West of Scotland). This means that there is a large and diverse student body where there are lots of activities and amenities, yet as a student of SAC you remain part of a smaller more closely knit group for classes, study and a variety of social activities.

The campus is the ideal setting for a friendly and relaxed student lifestyle. The newly built halls of residence will provide the comfort of modern student accommodation and be a focal point for meeting and socialising among students from both UWS and SAC.

The tradition of SAC’s friendly atmosphere will help new students settle and establish a network of friends to share both their learning and social activities. The student calendar is filled with club and social events so there are always activities to choose from. The on-campus Student Committees arrange many activities, both on campus and in the many accessible Ayr town venues.

The Student Entertainment Committee arranges regular dances, discos and events such as ceilidhs and quizzes and students also take a leading role in the Students' Charities Week in April when they and staff get together to raise as much cash as possible for local charities.

In addition to these activities, there is a range of clubs and societies operating every year, with new ones regularly introduced as interests change. There are also thriving Agriculture and Horticulture Societies. A Clubs and Societies evening is held during Freshers Week. Another event organised by students is the formal Summer Ball.

Other activities in the local area include

  • curling,
  • hillwalking
  • mountaineering
  • climbing
  • horse riding
  • fishing
  • golf
  • yachting
  • skating
  • curling
  • bowls
  • cinema
  • theatre,
  • live music venues

Exciting Glasgow is less than an hour away and offers all the social and cultural facilities expected of this major European city.

Student President

Ayr SRC President
"We have hockey and rugby teams in the British Universities league and both are doing well. There have been successful nights in the college bar and we've raised money for charity. SAC Ayr really is a fantastic place to study, and to have fun. It is true that college years can be amongst the best times you'll ever have."
