Tyndrum Community Woodland
SCDT, funded by the Millennium Forest for Scotland Trust, have planted a 110ha site next to Tyndrum with Scots pine and broadleaf species, using seed stock from the neighbouring native woodland remnant (Coille Coire Chuilic, seen to the south west).
The aim is to almost double that area of woodland. The site contains an abundance of drumlins (mounds of glacial spoil), and a kettle-hole lochan. Sculptures have been installed throughout.
The area was replanted in 1999 after being burnt out in a forest fire in 1995. Burnt out areas remain in the plantation above the railway line.
The mix of young and old trees, and scrub and heather vegetation encourages many different bird species, including blackgrouse.
The West Highland Way runs from Auchtertyre Farm through the site (2.5km), and to Tyndrum through an area of mature larch and Scots pine plantation. Near the NW end of the site is a barren area of mining spoil from the lead mines above Tyndrum.
Car access is at Dalrigh, 1.5 miles south of Tyndrum.
