St. Fillan's Priory
St Fillan's Priory, 3km - easy, West Highland Way
At Kirkton Farm are remains of the C14th St Fillan's Priory.
Robert the Bruce believed that the relic (left arm) of St. Fillan helped him win at Bannockburn and survive an earlier skirmish at Dalrigh in Strathfillan. The graveyard contains cross slabs, dating C7th.
The farm road cuts through the old priory. The remaining walls show that this building was extensive, suggesting a large local population.
Much of the original stone has been used for the present farm buildings and walls, and the flagstones from the chapel floor used to cover graves.
Remains of foundations of buildings from the priory can be seen around the new graveyard. In this graveyard 5 cypress trees were planted in 1899 ( of which 2 remain) in memory of five children from one Dalrigh family, who died within a space of two months.
Near the stream is the Priest's Well believed to have healing properties, released by walking round the small cairn below the well three times and adding a pebble.
If people were deemed insane they were immersed in the River Fillan at the Holy Pool near Auchtertyre Farm, and strapped to a bench inside the priory for the night. Early short, sharp, shock treatment!
