Ben Challum
Ben Challum 1025m (OS 50; NN387323)
Access to the hill from either Kirkton Farm (parking at road end) or Auchtertyre.
From St. Fillan's Priory at Kirkton, follow the hill track to the railway crossing and beyond until it peters out. Then walk up a grassy ramp to a steep path leading up further small ridges with a stream on the left. Aim for the left (west) side of the deer fence.
Follow the fence up to a flat area where it turns east and traverse round the coire to reach a rough path following a fence to the top of the hill. Alternatively follow the ridge from the corner of the deer fence to the top of the prominent knoll, then continue up to a long dry ridge meeting the rough path at a small stile.
The top of Ben Challum lies to the NE of the south peak. Cross onto the north westerly of the twin ridges which leads to the top. Good views can be seen as far as Ben Nevis and Ben Lawers.
Return the same way or by the NW ridge, traversing some slabs on the east side, to Gleann a' Chlachain and farm rack to Auchtertyre. (This route is steep and care should be taken in poor conditions).
Starting from Auchtertyre, follow the woodland walk to the viewpoint, then up a grassy and rocky ridge to the prominent knoll, and meet up with the above route.
Look out for tarmigan and golden eagles near the summit, and golden plover and curlew on the lower slopes in spring and summer. You may catch a glimpse of red deer, mountain hare and foxes
