Beinn Chaorach And Cam Chreag

Beinn Chaorach 818m; Cam Chreag 859m (OS map 50; NN359328 and 375346)

Beinn Chaorach/Cam Chreag, allow 6 hours - difficult mountain terrain, no waymarked paths

From Auchtertyre farm follow the landrover track up the hill into Gleann a' Clachain, until it ends at a big turning area. Strike uphill on steep ground next to a small stream, to easier grass slopes above.

A broad ridge leads to the narrowing summit marked by a trig point.

Good views to the west and the north can be seen.

Follow the grassy ridge down round the head of Gleann a' Clachin passing a wind generator and electric fence. The old fence follows the ridge to the Cam Chreag.

Continue SE along the top towards Ben Challum and descend back into Gleann a' Chlachain by a steep ridge marked with old steel fence posts. The fence crosses a flat col where it is possible to continue over the Nw ridge of Ben Challum (take care to keep left and bypass slabs).

Alternatively, return to the farm by following a small stream, through newly planted woodland, to the river.  Follow the dry ridge on the west riverbank to a gateway in the fence, then angle back up to the landrover track and return to the farm.

Look out for red deer in the corrie above the woodland fence and off the NE slopes of the Cam Chreag.  Alpine flowers can be found on the grassy areas of the Cam Chreag.

Meadow pipits are abundant on these slopes, and can be heard in the summer as they 'parachute' display over their territory.  Mountain ringlet butterflies can also be seen.
