Veterinary Services

SAC’s Pig Services provide support to veterinary practices, pig farmers and commercial companies involved with the pig industry. Our emphasis is on the provision of diagnostic services and practical advice to improve the health and productivity of pig production. In addition, we have an active Research and Development programme and undertake a wide range of contract work for commercial companies.

Disease Diagnosis

We provide a comprehensive and efficient diagnostic service for pig diseases. This includes post mortem examinations, microbiology, histopathology, serology and molecular based techniques. This provides disease surveillance information for the whole pig industry as well as a testing facility for commercial companies. We are committed to developing and providing the latest in diagnostic technology.

On-farm Consultancy

• Farm advisory visits covering all aspects of health husbandry, management and nutrition
• Problem solving in areas which affect productivity and profitability
• Detailed reports are submitted to the client following a personal visit. A thorough assessment and investigation of each individual herd enables SAC to recommend sound, practical solutions
• Ongoing support and veterinary advice as well as back up from other SAC specialists to cater for all aspects of a pig enterprise, for example buildings and ventilation

Herd Health Upgrade And Health Screening Programmes

An overall improvement in herd health can directly increase profit margins. We offer detailed advice and the skills necessary to implement new techniques in order to upgrade the health status of each individual pig enterprise.

Health screening programmes include:

• Clinical herd inspections and analysis of farm records
• Analysis of abattoir data, reports and examinations

Research And Development

SAC currently operates a wide range of commercial R&D projects. Our core programme encompasses projects on pig health and behaviour, welfare, nutrition and management.

Commercial Contracts

SAC has a good reputation for field and laboratory based work for commercial clients e.g. pharmaceutical, feed and pig breeding companies.
