The Avian Health Unit was set up in recognition of the specialised nature of avian medicine and pathology and to offer an improved support service to veterinary practitioners throughout the UK. Our staff have many years experience in the field of avian medicine and pathology.

Many practices have clients with large commercial poultry units of chickens, turkeys or game birds. Pigeons and cage birds are regularly seen in the consulting room and exotic species such as ostriches are becoming more common as a specialised commercial enterprise.

Among the services offered are:

• Post mortem examinations of poultry, game birds and ostriches with advice on disease treatment and control. This service is also available for racing pigeons, cage birds, aviary birds, raptors, wild species, exotics and zoo birds via Capital Diagnostics
• Advisory visits to poultry and game bird units
• Disease prevention programmes for poultry and game birds
• Salmonella testing for poultry and game bird flocks
• Health checks of live pigeons and raptors for worms, coccidiosis, salmonellosis,trichomoniasis and flukes
• Serological testing of poultry and game birds

SAC plans to increase the range of avian haematology and biochemistry profiles offered to veterinary practices for health checks and diagnostic services. Please contact us if you require a specific service as we may be able to provide it.
