Pigs

Generalised and systemic conditions

Meningitis and septicaemia were confirmed in a young boar which was submitted from a local finishing unit. Streptococcus suis serotype 2 was isolated from internal organs and brain. Streptococcus suis serotype 2 was also the cause of meningitis in two boars submitted from another finishing unit. The boars were part of a batch recently arrived from the rearing unit and four deaths were reported in the preceding week.

Septicaemia and multifocal abscessation due to infection with Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspp equisimilis were diagnosed in a 20-week-old pig submitted from a finishing unit. Eight sudden deaths were reported over the preceding 14 days in well grown pigs. Large abscesses were detected on the floor of the cranium and adjacent to the left hip joint, and multiple smaller abscesses were distributed through the lungs.

Three eight-week-old piglets were submitted with a history of ill thrift and wasting.  All had serofibrinous polyserositis and enlarged lymph nodes. No significant bacterial or mycoplasmal isolates were recovered from the effusions. The suspected diagnosis of PMWS was confirmed on histopathology.

Alimentary tract disorders
Yersinia enterocolitica was isolated from scour samples submitted from four 12 to18-week-old pigs. The submitter reported 100 per cent morbidity in the group.
