Cats
Salmonella Typhimurium 3 was isolated by Thurso from dying kittens found at a local refuse site in Orkney.
Horses
A nine-year-old mare with a history of depression, progressing to peri-ocular oedema and oedema of the head and neck compromising vision and respiration, subsequently developed circulatory failure and was euthanased and submitted to Aberdeen for postmortem examination. The significant primary pathology was a vasculitis in the conjunctiva and heart and a myocarditis with evidence of secondary terminal left heart failure. There was also evidence of chronic renal failure. The cause of the vasculitis and myocarditis was not established. No other horses in the yard were affected.
