Monthly Report June 2007

Overview
  • Acute fasciolosis diagnosed in eight- and 14-week-old calves.
  • Pasteurellosis in suckled calves at grass reported by most centres.
  • Fewer than average outbreaks of nematodiriasis diagnosed in lambs.
  • Caseous lymphadenitis (CLA) spreads to flocks in north of Scotland.
  • Coccidiosis in pheasant chicks precipitated by wet weather.
  • Tritrichomonas foetus detected in diarrhoeic samples from domestic cats in a rescue cattery.

Although Scotland did not experience the flooding seen in parts of England during June, the month was dull and wet over much of the country. The exceptions were the Northern Isles that saw exceptionally low rainfall and the Western Isles that had above average sunshine. The warm, wet weather since early May created ideal conditions for the development of liver fluke disease and associated conditions. The SAC VS will monitor this situation over the coming months. The SAC issued a press release to warn sheep farmers of the need to take action against roundworm parasites if lambs were to reach their target growth rates. The use of worm egg counting services such as "WormScan" was recommended to manage the use of wormer products.
