Monthly Report June 2006
- Respiratory Syncitial Virus infection in suckled calves at grass.
- White muscle disease common in new born calves in northern Scotland
- Presumptive diagnosis of botulism in heifers
- Nematodiriasis common in growing lambs
- Eimeria christenseni infection in goat kids
- Assumed congenital lordosis and kyphosis in wild boar
Average weather figures for the month indicated above average temperatures, and sunshine and below average rainfall, the driest June since 1996. There was however significant local variation with several low-pressure fronts affecting particularly the north and west of the country. Kinlochewe recorded a two-day rainfall total of 95 mm and on the 26th the temperature at Altnaharra fell to an unseasonal -1°C. The weather conditions promoted good grass growth after the late spring and gave an opportunity for making good quality grass silage, however yields were reduced. The weather conditions favoured parasite larval development on pastures, with Nematodiriasis in particular commonly reported.
