Monthly Report July 2006

Overview
  • Necrotising enteritis common in spring born suckler calves
  • Focal symmetrical encephalomalacia in suckler calves
  • Proliferative orf lesions in growing lambs
  • Liver disease of unknown aetiology in game birds

Scotland enjoyed exceptional weather during the month, which was the warmest since 1947, the sunniest since 1990 with only 75% of the average monthly rainfall recorded. The highest recorded temperature was 31° C at Prestwick. The hot weather caused a significant reduction in grass available for grazing and many dairy herds had to increase the levels of buffer feeding to compensate. Reports from practitioners suggested that digestive upsets such as left displaced abomasum and summer mastitis were significant problems in dairy cows. Poor growth rates were reported in lambs and beef cattle respectively.
