Wild Birds
Salmonella Typhimurium DT 56 variant was isolated from the viscera of two house sparrows (Passer domesticus) found dead in a stable. Both birds had marked thickening of the oesophagus and crop, with multiple white to yellow coalescing areas of necrosis.
Heavy growths of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis were recovered from the liver and joint of a house martin (Delichon urbica) that had been found alive but euthanased because it had a swollen elbow joint. The bird also had a granulomatous lesion at the infundibular cleft, but no significant bacteria, yeasts or protozoa were isolated or demonstrated and the cause of the granuloma was not determined.
