Cage and Aviary Birds
A peregrine cross gyr falcon aged twelve weeks died after an illness of seven days. Post mortem examination revealed multiple small yellow nodules in the airsacs and a large area of lung consolidation, and Aspergillus fumigatus was isolated in profusion. A diagnosis of mycotic pneumonia was also made in an unidentified species of parrot in which pale foci were noted in the lungs at post mortem examination – in this bird no fungi were isolated, but histopathology demonstrated a mycotic pneumonitis.
A budgerigar was submitted by a breeder with over 100 birds in indoor and outdoor aviaries. At least 10 birds had died in the previous two to three months. Large numbers of adult ascarid worms were found in the intestine of one bird submitted for post mortem examination.
