A fox that had been found dead in a field was submitted to the Edinburgh Centre for post mortem examination through the Wildlife Incident Investigation Scheme.
It was an aged female in poor bodily condition. The fox had been shot with an airgun as pellets were found in the muscle of the abdominal wall and skin of the left hind legs. The other lesions were consistent with an attack by dogs. Samples were collected for pesticides analysis.
Inverness isolated Escherichia albertii from the intestinal contents of a watervole that had evidence of enteritis. This organism has been isolated from diarrhoeic rabbits but is also a recognised zoonosis.
