Game Birds

Severe chronic sinusitis was evident in pheasants aged 22 weeks. Sinusitis had also been a problem during the previous season on this estate, which rears its own replacement birds.

An adult black grouse was submitted for examination after it was found in a moribund condition. The bird was very thin and multiple pale caseous granulomata were found in the liver. A diagnosis of avian tuberculosis was made after the demonstration of large numbers of acid-fast bacilli in Ziehl-Neelsen stained smears.
