Dogs and Cats
A five year old Rottweiler died from a peracute illness after showing respiratory distress and pyrexia with a body temperature of 106.6F. The dog died within three hours of the clinical signs developing and at post-mortem examination the thorax was found to contain a large volume of bloody fluid with floccular material. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from the thoracic fluid.
Horses
Streptococcus equi subspecies equi was cultured from a submandibular abscess in a thoroughbred horse.
A two-month-old thoroughbred foal was presented for necropsy after being treated for respiratory disease for six days. Gross pathology and histopathology revealed lesions of bacterial pneumonia and abscessation. Histopathology suggested that a subacute viral pneumonia had occurred subsequent to a chronic bacterial pneumonia, which was unusual. The histopathological lesions were not consistent with Rhodococcus equi infection. No significant bacterial isolates were made, possibly due to the antibiotic treatment.
