Overview

Paratuberculosis (Johnes disease) continues to increase in Scottish cattle
  • Blackleg in suckled calves
  • Salmonella Dublin in cattle
  • IBR in adult dairy cows
  • Post-dipping pneumonia in sheep
  • Streptococcus dysgalactiae arthritis in lambs
  • Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae in lambs and piglets
  • Salmonella Typhimurium in wild birds

 

Paratuberculosis continues to increase in cattle in Scotland and the trend is discussed in greater detail below.

Unsettled conditions predominated in Scotland during August. The mean temperature for the month was 13.2°C, which is 0.7°C above the 1961-1990 average, in the above average category. Sunshine hours were close to average and total rainfall, at 131.0 mm, 112% of the 1961-1990 average, was also in the close to average category.

Scottish abattoir values for steers, heifers and young bulls in July were well below equivalent figures for 2004. Sheep prices at Scottish auctions for new season lamb and ewes were also well below equivalent 2004 figures.
