The Aberdeen and Dumfries Centres reported outbreaks of canine parvovirus as a cause of death of puppies and young dogs. Multiple litters of different breeds were affected with vomiting and diarrhoea in the Aberdeen incident. All breeding bitches were reported to be fully vaccinated but both antigen detection and histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of parvovirus enteritis.
The Dumfries outbreaks involved two dogs that died of haemorrhagic diarrhoea at a rescue kennels and a nine-week old Great Dane puppy from a breeding kennels. Aberdeen also reported the isolation of Brachyspira canis from a faeces sample from a 12 week old Border Collie puppy with a history of colitis since purchase two weeks previously. In a separate incident large numbers of coccidial oocysts (consistent with Isospora ohioensis) were found in a faeces sample from a litter of six-week-old Cocker Spaniel pups with diarrhoea.
