Strengthening of Control of Infectious Animal Diseases in Lithuania - EU Twinning
The specific objectives of this project were to strengthen administrative and technical capacities:
- of Infectious Disease Control Centres and veterinary laboratories in accordance with relevant EU acquis on infectious diseases in order to control animal diseases and handle contagious animal disease emergencies
- to minimise the number of rabies cases amongst domestic and wild animals and thereby reduce the possibilities of human infection.
The project delivered the following results:
- Evaluation and analysis of infectious animal disease control systems and recommendations for the further development of these systems in accordance with EU acquis
- Specification and implementation of appropriate infectious animal disease control programmes
- Working instructions to support implementation of infectious animal disease control programmes
- Training programmes developed and delivered on control of infectious animal diseases
- Official accreditation of the National Veterinary Laboratory for rabies serology
- Enhanced control of rabies and strengthened eradication programmes in wildlife populations
These results were achieved through close co-operation of the Resident Twinning Adviser and the State Food Veterinary Service and provided a sound basis for compliance with EC Directives as Lithuania became a Member State of the EU.
