Reedbed Design And Construction

A Practical Solution For Rural Situations

A reedbed designed by SAC Environmental will effectively treat effluent from many types of rural development for years to come.

The simplest and cheapest system for disposing of domestic sewage in un-sewered areas is by septic tank and soakaway. Unfortunately, over 70% of soils are unsuitable for soakaways because of low permeability or high water table. In such instances, reedbeds provide a satisfactory means of treating septic tank effluent before discharging into a stream. Reedbeds can be adapted to treat industrial effluent from small rural businesses.

Designs include :

  • Single house
  • Villages
  • Visitor centres and cafes
  • Camp sites and caravan parks
  • Small and medium sized rural industries

Constructed reedbeds provide:

  • Cost-effective treatment
  • Low capital investment
  • Low operating and maintenance costs
  • Trouble-free operation over main years
  • Efficient removal of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and suspended solids
  • Flexibility of effluent loading
  • An environmentally friendly, 'soft' alternative to conventional 'hard' engineering.

SAC Environmental offers a full design service. Alternatively, clients can select from the following services:

  • Feasibility study
  • Soil and drainage assessment
  • Site survey
  • Design specification
  • Tender administration
  • Site supervision
  • Supply and planting of reeds
  • Reedbed maintenance until full establishment
