Contaminated Mine Drainage

Passive Wetland Systems For Cost Efficient Treatment

Water draining from active or abandoned mines presents a potentially serious pollution risk to nearby rivers. Problems can arise from both deep and open-cast workings with drainage water from spoil heaps also frequently affected.

A range of passive treatment systems, developed mainly in the USA, often offer the best option for long term low maintenance treatment.

Systems include anoxic limestone drains, aerobic wetlands and successive alkalinity producing wetlands.

Removal of contaminants such as iron, aluminium and acidity can be achieved, producing a drainage water of acceptable quality.

Accurate chemical characterisation of the water is essential, and SAC have invested in a comprehensive range of field and laboratory test equipment specifically for this purpose.

SAC Environmental has an unrivalled track record in designing and constructing treatment wetlands for a wide range of pollutants, using a variety of in-house specialist expertise.

The integration of these disciplines iis essential if a system is to be successful.

SAC Environmental offers a complete design service to clients including:

  • Planning surveys
  • Chemical analysis
  • Liaison with clients, landowners and regulators
  • Landscaping

We have the knowledge and skill to offer a full "turnkey" service as well as providing a full maintenance programme to meet each client's needs.
