Urban Storm Water Runoff

A 'Best Management Practice' Approach To Source Control

Storm water runoff from built-up areas such as car parks, housing developments and industrial estates, is increasingly seen to pose environmental problems.

As a result, developers are under pressure from environmental agencies and local authorities to implement "Best Management Practices" (BMPs) to reduce the impact of stormwater runoff on receiving rivers.

It is now recognised that storm water runoff adversely affects the flow regimes of rivers causing peaky discharges, and that the runoff storm water itself can be polluted with heavy metals, hydrocarbons and a range of other substances.

Best Management Practices (BMPs)

  • Infiltration systems such as porous pavements to reduce total runoff
  • Detention systems such as ponds and stormwater wetlands. Designed properly, these also remove pollutants
  • Mixed detention/infiltration treament systems such as grassed swales
  • Fully integrated design is essential.

SAC Environmental offers a complete design service including:

  • Planning surveys
  • Chemical analysis
  • Liaison with clients, landowners and regulators
  • Landscaping

We have the knowledge and skill to construct and maintain soakaway systems, ponds and artificial wetlands.

We can draw upon the expertise of a wide variety of in-house professionals: soil scientists, architects, engineers, landscape architects, chemists and microbiologists, to name but a few.
