DEFRA gave permission for SAC results for Scrapie Genotyping to be used for export purposes in November 2009. This arrangement can be backdated for samples received by SAC Consulting: Veterinary Services since 1st January 2008. The procedure is as follows:-

   1. Owners of animals tested by SAC Consulting: Veterinary Services since 1st January 2008 complete the application form for a Scrapie Genotyping Certificate for export purposes attached. We require to have the animal identity, breed, age (now) and sex. Please quote the SACVS reference number on the originall SAC report. Note - there is a charge of £7 (plus VAT) per animal for this service.

   2. Animals not previously tested by SACVS. A fresh blood sample must be collected by your vet and the submission form must state the animal's full identification number including its UK flock number. In addition we require the animal's breed, age and sex. The appropriate form can be downloaded from the PSGHS website or obtained from the PSGHS office (telephone number 01463 226995, Fax 01463 711103, email SGHS@sac.co.uk). Please tick that you require "an individual certificate for each animal" on the submission form.

For most sheep breeds 2-codon (136/171) testing is sufficient to place the animal in the appropriate scrapie risk group (1 to 5).  For Hampshires and Suffolks we recommend the codon 171 only test.  Some breeders require the 3-codon test in line with the National Scrapie Plan (NSP).  We provide the codon 136/154/171 test for these owners.  Please note for export purposes the 3-codon test is also required. All these tests are fully accredited by the independent accreditation body UKAS to ISO 17025.
