Caseous Lymphadenitis (CLA)
Disease Overview
This contagious bacterial disease caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis leads to the formation of abscesses round the body of sheep and goats. Whilst the majority of infected animals remain clinically healthy, most go on to develop visible external swellings. These chronic abscesses often discharge thick pus on to the skin and leave visible scars. In the last few years there have been a number of reports of an association between the internal or visceral form of CLA and chronic wasting in affected flocks. CLA cannot be effectively treated through the use of antibiotics.
Economic Impact
- Restrictions on sale of breeding stock
- Financial loss due to trimming or condemnation of carcasses
Benefits of Joining the Scheme
- Gives membership of a nationally recognised health scheme
- Gives added value to the flock
- Enables those buying breeding stock to purchase CLA monitored animals and reduce the risk of introducing CLA
For more information about CLA, please see the Quick Reference Guide on the right or contact the PSGHS office.
