On what basis do the standards permit the importation of manures from non-organic sources?

Imported, conventional manures should not form the basis of the crop nutrient supply on organic farms - the rotation (in particular legumes) and an efficient internal nutrient cycling system within the farm, should be the basis of nutrient supply.

Imported manures should, therefore, be seen as an adjunct to an organic system. The need for imported manures must be recognised by the Certification Body (e.g. for the maintenance of soil P and K status on a light, sandy soil). Thus, prior approval must be sought from the Certification Body.

In addition, there are restrictions on the type of manure which can be brought in.
