Is the use of conventional veterinary medicines allowed?
a) Therapeutically, to treat sick animals?
The use of conventional veterinary medicines is allowed if complementary therapies prove not to be, or are unlikely to be effective. Conventional treatment is therefore necessary to avoid suffering or distress to the animal, as long as it is under the responsibility of a veterinarian. If an organo-phosphorous compound is used, the animal loses its organic status.
b) Prophylactically (i.e. routine preventative treatment of healthy animals)?
The use of chemically synthesised allopathic veterinary products or antibiotics for preventative treatments is prohibited. Where, due to an identified disease risk the welfare of animals cannot be maintained by management practices alone, the certification body may permit the strategic use of conventional products, other than an antibiotic, within the context of the health plan.
