What is the maximum proportion of concentrates that can be fed in organic ruminant diets?

At least 60% of the dry matter (DM) in ruminant diets must be forage (i.e. grass, hay, silage, roots).

Thus, the concentrate part of the diet must not exceed 40%. This effectively rules out barley beef systems, and concentrate-based early lamb systems.

This proportion is calculated on a daily basis. For example, if a finishing beef animal is eating 10kg DM per day, a maximum of 4kg DM of concentrates can be fed.
