Are there any products approved for pest and disease control?
Yes there have been a number of products approved for pest and disease control, although as for weed control, the primary line of defence must be based on cultural and management strategies (e.g. crop rotation, varietal resistance).
The most commonly used products in organic farming are copper (e.g. copper oxychloride) for control of potato blight (maximum of 8kg copper/ha/annum, until 31 December 2005, thereafter 6kg copper/ha/annum; approval must be obtained from the Certification Committee for the use of this product before use), and sulphur for control of leaf diseases such as mildew.
