What procedures do I need to follow if I want to convert to organic?

If you wish to sell any product as organic, you must register with one of the approved private sector certification bodies. This is a legal requirement.

There are 16 of these in the UK. The three largest in Scotland are (a) SFQC/SOPA (Scottish Food Quality Certification (SFQC) / Scottish Organic Producers Association (SOPA), (b) Soil Association, and (c) Biodynamic Agricultural Association (BDAA). You can apply to the certification body to start conversion at any time of year.

The second procedure is to apply for Government subsidy support for conversion. In Scotland this is the Scottish Government Organic Aid Scheme. This is voluntary. You do not need to apply for this subsidy but it could be financially very beneficial. The annual deadline for applications for the Scottish Government OAS is 31 March.
