Grassland Development Farm Project
In 2009 SAC commenced a QMS sponsored project looking at improving grassland management on beef and sheep farms in Scotland. The aims and objectives are:
- To increase the utilisation of grass in Beef & Lamb production
- To reduce the costs associated with growing & finishing livestock.
- To impart knowledge to a wide range of stakeholders
- To communicate recent advances in grass breeding & management
Grassland Development Farms
South Mains, Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire
A 676 hectare farm in Upper Nithsdale, farmed by Doug and Lorna Greenshields. The farm carries 190 Stabilser suckler cows producing forward stores and breeding heifers, 700 Blackfaced and 800 Mule ewes with lambs finished and replacements home reared.
Hilltarvit Mains, Cupar, Fife
A 520 hectare mixed farm just South of Cupar, farmed by Ian, John and Margaret Whiteford. Stocking is 100 autumn calving cows producing finished cattle and 50 spring calving cows producing store cattle. A sheep flock of 550 Mules lamb in March with lambs finished and replacements purchased.
