Worms - Compost and bait

General

The common compost worm is the brandling (Eisenia fetida), which can be used to digest waste organic material to produce a high quality compost.
The worms themselves can be used for bait for anglers or as a high protein (~60% protein when dehydrated) feed for poultry and fish. They are self propagating and consume large quantities of waste. They do however need feeding, watering and protection from predators. Furthermore harvesting, packaging and marketing can be time consuming.

Please remember that special consideration must be given to the VAT aspects of diversification as the new activity may not be treated the same as the existing farm business from a VAT standpoint.

Market

Many market outlets exist and it is advisable to have multiple outlets. One possibility is to enter into a contract with a worm company. Worm casts can be sold to garden centres or direct to consumers as a component of compost.

Though competition is likely to be fierce, there may be small local markets which can be cultivated. Worms for bait can be sold through sport or fishing centres, or directly to anglers - although the market is limited to the fishing season. Another market is for domestic compost heaps and worm bins.

Finally, there is a market to supply worms for recycling of domestic and local authority waste.

Costs

The following costing information is general and current prices should be sought for budgeting purposes.

Capital Costs

Wonder Worms UK state that start-up costs for earnings to start in the first year will be around £5,000 per 1,000 sq ft (or about £54,000 per 1,000 sq m). If the worms are allowed to propagate in the first year start-up costs can be reduced to £1 per sq ft (~£10 per sq m).

Organic Resource Management is looking for contracted worm growers to satisfy its market for organic waste management. They estimate £12,500 + VAT will be needed for breeding stock, beds and equipment for a 1,000sq m unit.

Eco Group Holdings builds and stocks worm beds for its clients and then buys the worms for conversion to feed. The cost of a 1,000 sq m unit is around £6,000.

Running Costs

For a 1,000 sq m unit Organic Resource Management estimate weekly running costs of ~£80 - £90 (labour, feed, water, packing and transport) Labour - For 1,000 sq m unit about 20 hours per week.

Returns

Wonder Worms UK say £800 per month per sq ft of bed can be achieved (worms @ £10/kg) Organic Resource Management estimate a 1,000 sq m unit will yield 50kg - 60kg worms per week @ £7/kg giving weekly income of £350 - £420. Eco Group Holdings assume 60 kg of worms per week from a 1,000 sq m unit @ £2.50/kg.  A return can also be made from worm casts.

Constraints

Requires a certain level of expertise. Market outlets may be a problem in some areas. Attention to detail is required in management of the compost heap. Weed seeds. Moles may become pests. Weights and measures. Trades Descriptions Act.

Training

Wonder Worms UK run training courses.

Grants

Through the Scottish Rural Development Programme (SRDP) 2007-2013 funding is now available for rural businesses throughout Scotland for diversification and renewable energy projects. Specifically, support is delivered through Rural Development Contracts – Rural Priorities which was launched in April 2008. For further information about what support is available see the Section on Rural Development Contracts – Rural Priorities.
