Watch out of whiteheads and lodging

As crops ripen off, check for patches of the field which are ripening prematurely

The root disease take-all and the stem base disease common eyespot can cause patches of crop to ripen early. Although the symptoms appear on the heads, the damage to the plants is down at the stem base and roots.

Stems weakened by eyespot will be more prone to stem lodging.

Little can be done now, but for future crops, you can minimise take-all trhough crop rotation, sow date and use of some seed treatments.

There is an eyespot risk frecst which can help determine the eyespot risk. This will enable you to avoid high risk situations and also choose specific eyespot fungicides  where crops are grown in high risk situations.
