Check for wheat bulb fly. In recent years egg counts have been at record levels. Seed treatments can help protect crops.
The average egg count is 5.3 million eggs/ha.
The recommended treatment thresholds are 2.5 million eggs/ha for early sown wheat, and 1.25 million eggs/ha for late sown (October onwards) wheat, then there is still a high risk of wheat bulb fly damage in susceptible crops.
High risk situations are on farms with a history of wheat bulb fly problems, sowing wheat after potatoes, field vegetables, fallow set-aside, or any fields where there has been bare soil from July onwards.
There is still time for soil sampling for wheat bulb fly eggs to be carried out, providing the field has not been cultivated, as this buries the eggs and makes an accurate assessment of egg numbers difficult.
If you can put a figure on wheat bulb fly egg numbers, then the options open for wheat bulb fly management can be better judged and applied where necessary.
