Watch for yellow rust in winter wheat

Watch for yellow rust in crops.

Yellow rust risk has increased in recent years and many popualr varieties are susceptible to the disease.  Where the gap between the stem extension fungicide and the flag leaf fungicide has been stretched, yellow rust can potentially take off.  Current wet weather  may reduce the opportunity to protect the flag leaf, so watch out.

Check all wheat varieties, since rust races can change, particulalry during a high disease pressure year.

Managing yellow rust is straight forward as far as protection is concerned, but eradicating the disease is a greater challenge.
