Ramularia showing up in spring barley - July

Ramularia leaf spots are developing in spring barley. 2007 was a high risk year following the wet weather in June.

Ramularia can be found in the seed and it develops unnoticed inside the plant. Leaf  wetness and waterlogging can cause stress which triggers the ramularia to produce a light activated toxin. Sunshine then triggers the formation of the  distinctive symptoms on the upper leaves as crops approach water ripe growth stages.

Fungicide protection at early ear emergence can efectively reduce symptoms forming. There are also differences in varieatl resistance, but popular malting barley varieties are susceptible.
