Yellow rust in wheat
Winter Wheat Yellow Rust
Yellow rust can spread between wheat varieties that are susceptible to the same race of the pathogen.
The risk of severe and widespread infection may be reduced by:
Growing varieties with good resistance to yellow rust (as indicated by high resistance ratings on the HGCA Recommended List)
Diversifying the varieties grown on a farm so that they are not all susceptible to the same race of yellow rust. This is achieved by using the Variety Diversification Scheme.
Choosing varieties to grow together
- Select a first-choice variety and find its Diversification Group (DG).
- Go to the selection matrix and find this DG under 'Chosen DG' on the left hand side of the table.
- Read across the table to find the risk of yellow rust spread for each companion DG.
L = low risk
H = high risk
VH = very high risk
Wherever possible choose combinations of varieties marked 'L'.
If there is a choice of varieties in a companion DG, give preference to those with higher resistance ratings (see 1-9 ratings in HGCA Recommended List)
