Grassland

Pages In This Document

General Description

Grassland is a major crop in Scotland. In 2004, there was 322,186 hectares in grass under five years and 902,000 hectares in grass for over 5 years. (The Economic Report on Scottish Agriculture 2005).

Some pests associated with grassland, may have an impact on other cereals grown in the rotation.

Leatherjackets for example can be a major pest of spring barley sown after grass.

Aphids present in grassland can harbour the virus disease Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV). Cereals sown following grass in the rotation can be affected by this disease.

The weed ragwort can also be found in grassland.  This weed is poisonous to livestock and a threat to grazing animals including horses.

Control ragwort in grassland

Ragwort populations have been on the increase for many years, and cases of poisoning of livestock show no signs of abating. The spring this may have encouraged emergence of new seedlings and growth of established plants already, but if not, they will start soon. More..
