Botrytis

Botrytis cinerea

Pages In This Document

General Description

Botrytis is a common disease which affectes a wide range of crops, including peas and oilseed rape.

The fungus can develop rapidy on dying plant material, but it can also attack green living tissue. Mild humid weather conditions favour the disease, and the disease can initially develop in peas and oilseed rape by attacking the petals.

Biology

Mild and wet weather at flowering will favour disease development.  The disease initially develops on the petals and then attacks the developing pods.  Once the pods are well established, the risk of pod loss from botrytis is lower.

Advice

For the pea crop, wet weather at flowering are high risk conditions for botrytis. Protect the crop with a fungicide at this time.
