- Scottish farming will have to adapt to climate change, take steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to carbon capture through soil management, crops and timber.
- The Scottish Government has proposed a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 80% by 2050. Scottish farming contributes 13% of total Scottish emissions and will be expected to contribute to the reduction in greenhouse gases proposed.
Climate Change - Facing A Serious Threat
"Scottish farmers can lead the fight against climate change and not only help our environment but help their businesses at the same time"
Richard Lochhead, Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment, September 09.
Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide surround the earth’s surface and help to heat it. Increased production of these gases through human activity has increased their concentration in the atmosphere.
This has resulted in the earth becoming warmer – global warming – and has changed climate patterns. Scotland’s weather is expected to become warmer and drier in the summer and milder and wetter in the winter, with an increased frequency of extreme weather events such as flooding.
Scottish farmers have experience of farming in difficult weather conditions and will quickly adapt their farming systems to address climate change.
